Three names, two things

GRAM
The money. What you hold, send and receive.
Toncoin
The same money, under its old name. Being phased out, but still everywhere.
TON
Not money. The network it all moves on — the road, not the car.
There’s a wallet in my Telegram. What is it?

It is a place to hold money inside Telegram, built into the app rather than installed separately. You did not ask for it and you do not have to use it. It sits there until you do. [CONFIRM against Telegram’s official announcements at publishing time.]

What is GRAM?

GRAM is the money in that wallet. You will also see it called Toncoin, which was its old name — the same thing, renamed. Both names will be around for a while, so it is worth knowing both.

Then what is TON? I keep seeing three names.

TON is not money. It is the network the money moves on. GRAM is what you hold, TON is what carries it, and Toncoin is just GRAM’s old name. Three words, two things.

What can I do with it?

Four things, mostly: send money to someone, receive money from someone, pay for something, and support a project you like. All of it happens inside Telegram, the same way you send a message.

What does “only you hold the keys” mean?

The good part: nobody can take your money, freeze it, or decide you are not allowed to have it. The serious part: if you lose your recovery words, nobody can get it back for you. Not us, not Telegram, not anyone. That is the whole trade.

Three safe first steps with a wallet
  1. 1.Look, don’t touch. Open the wallet in your Telegram settings and just read what is there. You do not have to do anything yet.
  2. 2.Write down your recovery words. On paper. Not in a photo, not in a notes app, not in a chat with yourself. Put the paper somewhere you would keep a passport.
  3. 3.Send yourself something tiny. The smallest amount you can. Watch it arrive. Now you know how it works, and it cost you almost nothing to find out.
